Hints for Today’s Puzzle

Hint 1: Skater/Surfer Terms

Look for words that could come from skater or surfer lingo. Words like "gnarly" and "radical" are classic 80s terms used to express something impressive. Think of phrases a skateboarder or surfer might use.

Hint 2: Mathematics Terms

There’s a category of words related to mathematics here. These terms are commonly found in algebra and math equations. Words like "root" and "exponent" point in this direction.

Hint 3: Types of Rooms

Think of terms that can come before the word "room" to describe different types of rooms, possibly even slang terms. The “throne room” might not be in a castle, but a certain place where people often sit alone!

Hint 4: Small Quantities

This category includes words that suggest a small amount of something, a hint of something small or minuscule. Think of terms used to describe a slight trace of something.

Answer Walkthrough

If you want answers then here’s a look at today’s puzzle and my thought process, full of twists, turns, and a few unexpected revelations.

Attempt 1: The Skater

I put my best skater instincts forward, guessing that gnarly, radical, shred, and twisted might fit together as skateboard terms. Nope, red herring! Looks like that line of thinking is leading nowhere. Time to shake off the skater vibe and dive back in.

Second Attempt: Contortion

I start noticing words like bent, warped, twisted, and maybe gnarly. Could these words fit a category like “contorted” or “disfigured”? But after mulling it over, I’m not fully convinced and decide to keep that in the back pocket. This group might still connect somehow, though—possibly terms for things that are distorted in some way. File that under “maybe.”

Third Attempt: Mathematics Connection

Then, it dawns on me: root, exponent, and power are all mathematical terms. Adding radical into the mix here feels promising too—radicals have something to do with roots, right? (Although I’ll admit, math wasn’t my strongest suit!) I go for it: Mathematics terms! Bingo! We've got our first successful group in blue! Now, don’t ask me to give a lecture on radicals, but I’m claiming this win and moving on.

Fourth Attempt: Rooms

With a bit of inspiration, Throne, bath, rest, and powder start looking like the names of various types of rooms. Throne room, bathroom, restroom, powder room—you could even argue the throne room isn't just where royalty holds court, but perhaps where they take care of other important business, if you catch my drift! I’m confident with this group and click through. Success! That’s our second set, in yellow.

The Answers

If you’ve worked through the hints and are ready to confirm your answers, here they are!

  1. Skater/Surfer Terms: Gnarly, Shred, Radical, Bent

Today’s puzzle was a fun mix of categories, with a few red herrings to keep it challenging. Those math terms like "exponent" and "root" were easy for the math-savvy, while the room terms like "throne" and "powder" hinted at different types of rooms. And, of course, the small quantity words gave us a fun little group focused on slight or trace amounts.

Did you manage to solve it? Let me know how you did in the comments! Thanks for playing along, and see you tomorrow for more Connections fun!
